Outdoor Activities

Pinnacle Park

Hike to the top of The Pinnacle (elevation 5,008 feet) near Sylva for panoramic views of the valley in Jackson County. The steady uphill hike of 3.4 miles one way climbs 3,000 feet in elevation, following an old logging road for much of the way. The entire hike follows the West Fork Trail that starts at the back of the parking lot at an iron gate. About a ½ mile into the hike, you’ll pass a huge split rock. Shortly after that, stop to catch a glimpse of Fisher Creek. Be sure to wear sturdy hiking shoes for the rocky, uneven sections of the trail. About two miles into the hike, you’ll take a left and arrive at an open grassy ridge with some campsites. From there, take the narrow trail to continue through the rhododendron to the Pinnacle summit.

Casting a Line in Sylva:

Jackson County is home of the Western NC Fly Fishing Trail, which maps out 15 prime spots to catch rainbow, brown, and brook trout in the crystal-clear streams of the Great Smoky Mountains. The Tuckasegee River is the county’s largest body of water, flowing a distance of 50 miles. The “Tuck” as it’s called by locals, is stocked with 92,800 trout in its waters each year. It’s no wonder Jackson County is recognized as the NC Trout Capital! Whether you’re looking for open rivers or hidden mountain streams, you’ll find the perfect place to cast a line in Sylva.
